A communication device for a portable terminal and a method therefor are provided to share information with the portable terminal and an external data terminal device and to transmit information of the portable terminal from the portable terminal to the external data terminal device. A wireless communication unit(123) performs the first wireless communication function with a base station. A local area communication unit(150) performs the second wireless communication function with a device located in a local area. A memory(130) stores contents of a portable terminal. A display unit(140) displays menu information for the local area communication, and displays a state of a selected local area communication function. A control unit(110) controls the local area communication unit(150) by the menu selection of the display unit(140), connects to an external device, and outputs the contents stored in the memory(130) to the local area communication unit(150) according to a command of the external device received through the local area communication unit(150). The control unit(110) receives a file, and stores the received file in the memory(130). The control unit(110) outputs contents of the memory(130) selected by the menu selection of the display unit(140) to the local area communication unit(150).
