[Also in Division C3] Expanded olefin polymer mouldings are prepared by heating and fusing together in a closed mould expanded particles of an ethylene copolymer which contains carboxylic acid groups and carboxylic acid t.-butyl or isopropyl ester groups. The particles may be compressed by 5 to 70% of their original bulk volume prior to, during or after heating, e.g. by compression by at least one, preferably two, sides of the mould towards the centre of the mould cavity. The process may be effected continuously, e.g. between four moving belts arranged to form a channel. The mould should be provided with means for the escape of gaseous and liquid components. Heating may be effected by hot gases or liquids, e.g. water, glycerol and aqueous salt solutions, by infra-red heating, or by the insertion of heating probes removed prior to compression of the particles. The mouldings may be subjected to size reduction and reheated under pressure in a mould. The products may be used for sound insulation and shock absorbing. Examples describe the moulding of expanded particles comprising talc and copolymers of ethylene with t.-butyl acrylate and acrylic acid, isopropyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid, t.-butyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid or isopropyl maleate and maleic acid, in metal moulds having four vertical perforated faces and perforated base and coverplates movable towards the centre of the mould cavity, heated by (1, 2 and 4) hot air and (3) hot water.</p> |
