The retarder has an insert (105) in ring gear shape, and a transmission flange (102) cooperating with a transmission shaft (101). A coupling flange (104) cooperates with an output shaft (103) of a gear box. The insert has transoms (121) for accepting the flange (102) so that the flanges are directly fixed to each other, and cavities (111) emerging on the inner circumference (115) to fix the insert on flange (102). An independent claim is also included for a use of an electromagnetic retarder on a truck or a bus.
