Napped fabrics of synthetic fibres comprising at least 80% by weight of acrylnitrile are impregnated with an aqueous solution of ethylene carbonate to prevent matting, pilling and shedding of the nap under normal laundering and wearing conditions. The treating solution may also contain a silicone resin, an antistatic agent, e.g. a polyamine resin such as diethylene triamine cross-linked with polyethylene glycol di-iodide or an epoxy resin and a water repellent agent, e.g. "Phobotex" (Registered Trade Mark). Aqueous solutions, which may be applied by padding, having an ethylene carbonate concentration of 0.05-50% by weight may be used and after treatment the fabrics may be dried and heated for 5-60 minutes at a temperature of 240 DEG -300 DEG F. Woven, non-woven or knitted fabrics made from fibres comprising polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of acrylonitrile with other monomers containing >C = C< linkages, numerous examples of which are given, or blends of acrylonitrile polymers or copolymers having an overall acrylonitrile content of at least 80% by weight may be treated. |
