PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology for reducing required driving force to reduce or enlarge volume of an internal combustion engine when changing a compression ratio, thereby saving energy, and miniaturizing a driving source for generating driving force in the variable compression ratio internal combustion engine changing a compression ratio of the internal combustion engine by changing volume of a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: In this variable compression ratio internal combustion engine increasing or reducing a compression ratio of the internal combustion engine by reducing or enlarging volume of the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, pressure inside a cylinder of the internal combustion engine is reduced or increased (S105, S107) to reduce its driving force when reducing or enlarging volume of the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine (S106, S108) by predetermined driving force.
