The method involves pre-honing a bore wall at at least one of two end regions by moving a honing tool (1) which has honing stones (4) and guide strips (3). The honing stones clear away the bore wall in a work region which is at least in part outside of the guide region where the guide strips support the tool. The honing tool is supported resiliently through the strips through the action of a pretensioning force. Independent claim describes honing tool with radial strips and an actuation device (9) which moves the honing stones in a radial direction and is linked to a control device (10) and pretensioning device (11).
