A friction hinge particularly for hopper lights and casement windows comprises an elongated sash plate 1 adapted for attachment to a movable member of a window, a shoe 4 pivotally connected to one end of the sash plate e.g. by rivet 3 and slidable in a channel 7 formed in a strip of thin material 8 (i.e. relatively thin compound with the thickness of each elongated plate) fixed to an elongated plate 10 or aligned plates adapted for attachment to a fixed part of the window and a stay arm 12 pivotally connected at 11 to the sash and the elongated plate or one of the aligned plates. The shoe may have one edge bent over at 5, Fig. 4, providing a radiused surface 6 slidable in channel 7 having a part circular cross section which is preferably of a radius greater than the edge of the shoe so that minimum friction is caused. The channel 7 is preferably formed at one long edge of a thin metal strip 8 which is folded upon itself to provide a flange 9 which abuts against the plate 10 having cross section dimensions preferably corresponding with the sash plate and stay arm. The flange may project slightly above the elongated plate 10 so that the shoe slides on the flange clear ofthe plate thereby lessening friction. |
