PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper modifying agent capable of producing paper to which various added values are given, by decreasing a density of the paper, while preventing extreme deterioration of a sizing degree and strength of the paper, and improving thickness, whiteness, opacity, flexibility, etc., at the same time, and simple in a handling procedure thereof, and to provide a method for producing the paper using the same. SOLUTION: This paper modifying agent contains a reaction product which is formed by adding a 2-4C alkylene oxide to active hydrogen of a polyalkyleneimine having a weight-average molecular weight of 500-10,000 to form an addition compound and then reacting the addition compound with a 12-24C higher fatty acid and/or an ester compound of the 12-24C higher fatty acid.
