PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine in a shortened reaction time through finding a highly efficient reaction process. SOLUTION: The method for producing a carboxy compound from the corresponding methyl group-containing compound involves irradiating the reaction system with electromagnetic waves, preferably irradiating the reaction system with electromagnetic waves in the presence of an acid and an oxidizing agent in the 1st step followed by irradiating the reaction system with electromagnetic waves in the presence of the oxidizing agent in the 2nd step, wherein it is especially preferable that the methyl group-containing compound is 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine and the objective carboxy compound is 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine.
