The protective barrier (1) has a modified C-section or U-section rail (2) with an overhanging horizontal top flange (6) with a downward extension (7). The rail has a vertical wall (3) with earth (9) packed behind it and is held on vertical posts (16) buried in the ground. An M-section or W-section reinforcement rail (14) is bolted to the rear sides of the posts. The bottom flange (4) is nearly horizontal and is level with the ground in front of the barrier. A vertical extension (5) is buried in the ground.
