1,167,519. Light polarizing laminate. INTERNATIONAL POLAROID CORP. 6 Dec., 1966 [10 Dec., 1965], No. 54590/66. Addition to 1,151,772. Heading B5N. [Also in Division G2] A laminate comprises a substrate having a generally planar information-bearing surface laminated to a substantially transparent sheetlike element comprising an oriented polymeric material, or oriented glass, at least a portion of which has been rendered light-polarizing by dyeing with (a) a mixture of a positive dichroic dye and a differently coloured negative dichroic dye or (b) a mixture of a positive dichroic dye and a differently coloured isotropic dye or (c) a mixture of a negative dichroic dye and a differently coloured isotropic dye or (d) a double dichroic dye. The oriented polymeric material may be polyvinyl alcohol, partially dehydrated polyvinyl alcohol, a vinyl alcohol copolymer, hydrolysed cellulose acetate or blends of polyvinyl alcohol with polyvinyl pyridine. Preferably the element has a dyed stripe. The substrate may be of metal, paper or wood and may comprise a photograph, e.g. a silver transfer image. The substrate and the element may be bonded by a pressure-sensitive butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, an epoxy resin or a cyanoacrylate polymer. A further transparent layer capable of embossment, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or a blend of polyvinyl chloride with polyvinyl acetate may be bonded to the free surface of the oriented element. Examples are given. |
