PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon nitride composite material excellent in oxidation resistance and to provide a method for producing the same.

SOLUTION: The silicon nitride composite material 10 is one improved in oxidation resistance wherein a silicate phase 12 composed of a rare earth element silicate is distributed among crystal grains composed of silicon nitride 11 as a matrix phase, and metal silicate particles 13 are dispersed in the silicate phase 12.
