PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce dispersion in mutual positional accuracy of magnetic gaps and to improve the yield in a multichannel type thin film magnetic head in which a plurality of steps of thin film head elements are layered on a substrate. SOLUTION: In the thin film magnetic head 12, a plurality of steps of induction type magnetic head elements 23 and 24 are layered on a same substrate 22, the elements 23 and 24 being composed of pairs of upper and lower magnetic core layers 26 and 29, and 29 and 33 which are placed opposite to each other through magnetic gaps g1 and g2 and having thin film coils 28 and 32, and a multi-track structure is formed along the direction which is tilted at equivalent to an azimuthal angle from the vertical direction with respect to the layered direction of the magnetic core layers. The upper layer magnetic core of the induction type magnetic head element 23 of the lower part side and the lower layer magnetic core of the induction type magnetic head element 24 of the upper part side are made into the same magnetic core layer 29.
