The rotary piston engine (1) has a housing (2) with two rotatable pistons (3, 4). The volume (35) which is enclosed between a rib (31, 32, 33) of the first piston , the housing and the second piston changes substantially linearly with the rotational angle at least over a certain angular range. The proportionality factor of the volume change corresponds substantially to the cross-sectional surface area in the direction of the circumference of the first piston.
