PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper carrying device having a structure capable of preventing paper from being damaged or carrying parts from being damaged by avoiding the collision thereof against a side fence jogger by an unforeseen accident, such as a case where an excessive skew occurs. SOLUTION: A paper attitude detection means S disposed on the upstream side of a guide member 30 in the carrying direction of the paper P and detecting the obliquing state of the incoming paper P in a clearance between the opposed guide members 30 is connected to an input side. The drive means 35 of the guide member comprises a control part 37 connected to an output. The control part 37 operates a drive member 35 to retract the guide member 30 from a paper P accepting and waiting position to the outside when the obliquing state of the paper P is determined to be in an excessive state deviated from a specified state by detection signals from the paper attitude detection means S.
