A lifting unit for a motor vehicle recovery vehicle comprises a cross traverse (2) with a fixing unit (3) to receive the lifter through a crane and left and right sides (5) connected to the traverse, each with front and back lifting belt (12) points (10). Belts are fixed to the motor vehicle wheels and run to the fixing points to apply the lifting force. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a lifting arrangement as above;and (b) a recovery process using the above.
