The locking device has a bolt (30) and associated guide assembly (36, 40) and actuating element (6,7). An elbow lever gearing (12) between the bolt and actuating element moves the bolt between the locking position and the passive position and interacts with the bolt guide assembly so that at the start of the unlocking movement and end of the locking movement the bolt moves in a straight line. The elbow lever gearing moves into a self-locking over-dead- centre position to secure the bolt in the locked position. The bolt has a locking stop (41) which meets a locally fixed counter stop (43) on the vehicle structure (2).
