<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having the operability favorable to a visually handicapped person. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 shifts to an energy saving mode to reduce electric power consumption when an energy saving shift timer clocks the prescribed waiting time but when a speech guidance is effectively changed over by a speech guidance key 31, the apparatus supplies a power source to a human body detection sensor 33 for detecting a human body to detect the presence or absence of the human body. The apparatus clears the clocking of the energy saving shift timer when the human body detection sensor 33 detects the human body while the energy saving shift timer starts clocking the non-operation time. Accordingly, when the speech guidance is enabled, the apparatus clears the energy saving shift timer while the human body detection sensor 33 detects the human body, thereby surely preventing the inadvertent mode clear due to a shift to the energy saving mode.
