<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarized light illumination device which is inexpensive, highly efficient and highly uniform and to provide a projection type display device using the polarized light illumination device. <P>SOLUTION: The polarized light illumination device is formed by joining a first transparent body and a second transparent body so that their roof-shaped faces face each other, the first transparent body being formed such that its one side has a flat face and the other side has a plurality of 90° roofs arranged parallel to the flat face and the second transparent body being formed such that one side has a lens face having positive refracting force and the other side has a plurality of 90° roofs arranged in parallel.
