The road vehicle ignition switch and mechanical lock assembly (10) has an actuator knob (12) controlling a mechanical steering lock (20). The assembly includes an electric lock (18) with an electric switch and a lock cylinder (14) with a slot (46) receiving a key (22) with a identification circuit (28,30,34). There is a display (16) adjacent to the actuator knob. The system is connected to the vehicle computer (24).
