<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen storage metal nitride in which an average particle size is controlled by mechanical milling treatment and also a hydrogen occluding and releasing cycle time is shortened and further operation temperature is lowered by hydrogen activating treatment. <P>SOLUTION: In the hydrogen storage metal nitride, the average particle size is lowered to ≤ 10 μm by subjecting Li<SB>3</SB>N obtained by heat treating metallic Li in a nitrogen atmosphere to mechanical milling treatment.
