PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To certainly conduct the coupling or uncoupling of a starting drum to or from a crankshaft in a starter of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The invention relates to the starter of the internal combustion engine. The starter has the starting drum capable of being connected to the crankshaft (3) of the internal combustion engine via at least a ratchet mechanism (13, 23). The ratchet mechanism (23) has at least a claw (25) rotatably supported. The claw (25) connects the starting drum to the crankshaft (3) at a first position (44) cooperating with a transmitting member (19), and disconnects the crankshaft (3) from the starting drum at a second position (4). A wall (28) is arranged outside a rotary axis line (29) of the claw (25) in the axial direction, and clearance (34) is formed between the claw (25) and the wall (28).
