PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably control a motor within a motor type operating device designed to move an object through the work of the motor by utilizing the function of a sensor regarding the motor. SOLUTION: The steering gear for a vehicle includes two motors B, C in a mutually redundant arrangement to operate a rack axis for altering the direction of right and left wheels 12, 12, two sensors 70, 70, designed to detect the phases of the motors B, C, a motor D installed to operate a pinion axis 72 formed for collaborative movement with the rack axis 56, and a controller 40. The controller 40 controls the motors B, C in accordance with the phases detected through the sensors 70, 70, determines the phase of the motor D based on electric signals from the motor D, and implements sensorless control of the motor D in accordance with the determined phase.
