<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve responsibility of an alignment division vertical alignment LCD (liquid crystal display) while suppressing lowering of contrast thereof. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a plurality of pixels each of which having a first electrode, a second electrode opposite to the first electrode and a vertical alignment liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second electrodes. The pixel has a rib arranged on the first and/or second electrode side of the liquid crystal layer. The rib has inclined side faces in contact with the liquid crystal layer. When the product of the summed lengths RL of the side faces of the rib within the pixel, seen from a direction normal to the liquid crystal layer, and the height RH of the rib is represented by RS (=RL×RH) and the area of the pixel is represented by PS, inequalities RL/PS≥0.05 (μm<SP>-1</SP>) and further RS/PS≤0.05 are satisfied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
