PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a braking device for a sliding door slowing down always to the fixed low speed corresponding to the speed of a door body, completely closing in a very gentle manner without stopping then, light in operation of closing a remaining open part even if stopping in the middle of slowing down, and allowing always light operation when opening. SOLUTION: This braking device for a sliding door is provided with a body device having a body case, a gear member constituted to be vertically movable, and a speed reducing member to which a fixed load is applied when the gear member is rotated; and a receiving device comprising a receiving case having a horizontal rack continuous with a longitudinal side face. The body device and the receiving device are mounted in arrangement to face the door body and a frame body. A means is provided for inserting the gear member in the receiving case only in a fixed range where the gear member faces a predetermined position of the receiving device, and the gear member is meshed with the rack and rotated to reduce the speed of the door body. The force of the gear member reducing its own weight, and frictional force generated to the gear member and the rack, are optionally set to suitably detach the gear member from the rack.
