PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video reproducing apparatus and a video reproducing method in which content information desired by a user is selected to perform automatic reproduction when no operation is performed while a menu picture is displayed. SOLUTION: When it is detected that some items have not been selected for a predetermined period of time when a menu picture containing a plurality of selection items is displayed and content information corresponding to the selected items is reproduced by selecting some of the plurality of selection items, the number of thumbnail images that the content information corresponding to the plurality of selection items has is calculated and compared, thereby selectively reproducing the content information having the largest number of thumbnail images or the content information having the smallest number of thumbnail images out of the plurality of selection items.
