<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a matrix type display device which improves waveform rounding of a driving voltage to improve display luminance and gradation expression, and its driving method. <P>SOLUTION: Cathode electrodes 31-1, 31-2, 31-3, ... of an (A)th column are connected to two wires 15-A1 and 15-A2 alternately and a proper column wire driving voltage Vcol is applied from those two wires 15-A1 and 15-A2 to the respective cathode electrodes 31-1, 31-2, 31-3, ... so that only pixels for one column (one line) can always alternatively illuminate.
