PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air compressor which generates small noise when air consumption is small, and which quickly transfers to high speed rotation in a case of consuming mass quantity of air in a short time. SOLUTION: This air compressor for an air tool comprises a tank part to store compressed air to be used for the air tool, a compressed air generating part to generate compressed air to be supplied to the tank part, a drive part having a motor to drive the compressed air generating part, and a control circuit part to control the drive part. It is provided with a pressure sensor to detect pressure of the compressed air in the tank part. The control circuit part is provided with a pulsating portion elimination means eliminating a pulsating portion of a detection signal P1 by the pressure sensor, and first and second differential means. The detection signal P1 of the pressure sensor is input in the pulsating portion elimination means and the first differential means, and the output P2 of the pulsating portion elimination means is input in the second differential means. It controls rotation speed of the motor in a plurality of stages in accordance with the detection signal P1 of the pressure sensor and the output of the first differential means d(P1)/dt, and the output of the second differential means d(P2)/dt.
