PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of computing an accurate atmospheric pressure correction factor based on the output of an airflow meter. SOLUTION: The control device for the internal combustion engine controls an intake air quantity by changing the maximum lift quantity of an intake valve 8. A reference intake air quantity based on the engine speed and the maximum lift quantity is corrected with the atmospheric pressure correction factor to compute the intake air quantity, and the atmospheric pressure correction factor is computed based on an actual intake air quantity detected by the airflow meter 7 and the reference intake air quantity at that time when the flow velocity of intake air passing through the intake valve becomes almost acoustic velocity.
