POLYELECTROLYTE MEMBRANE AND MEMBRANE ELECTRODE ASSEMBLY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyelectrolyte membrane in which uneven shape can be introduced on the surface without giving chemical and/or physical damages to the membrane, and the porous structure of the catalyst layer and the uneven structure formed on the membrane surface are not broken at the time of manufacture of MEA and which is superior in jointing performance with the electrode, and a membrane electrode assembly.

SOLUTION: The polyelectrolyte membrane comprises a first membrane made of a first solid polyelectrolyte and a protruded part made of a second solid polyelectrolyte formed at least on one of the surfaces of the first membrane. The protruded part is formed by adhering the second polyelectrolyte or a powder made of its precursor on the surface of the first membrane or its precursor. The membrane electrode assembly comprises the polyelectrolyte membrane having protruded parts on the surface and a catalyst layer formed on both sides of the polyelectrolyte membrane and at least one of the catalyst layers is formed by spraying a solution containing a catalyst on the surface of the polyelectrolyte membrane.
