<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stop an carrying action of a sheet by certainly detecting a foreign substance such as a staple or a clip attached to the sheet, and to prevent the breakage of a photoconductor drum and the like. <P>SOLUTION: The sheet carrying device 10 comprises a pair 20 of guides disposed at specified interval, inserting a sheet S in this interval, and insulated from each other; a resistance measuring means 11 measuring electric resistance between the pair 20 of the guides; and a controlling means 12 controlling an carrying action of the sheet S. When the sheet S with the staple ST passes through the interval, the staple ST contacts with both of the guides 21, 22, thereby causing change in the electric resistance between the pair 20 of the guide. The resistance measuring means 1 measures the electric resistance R1 at the time of passage of the staple ST.
