PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner with an improved throughput. SOLUTION: When a repeat mode is selected in an image reading device, scan pre-processing is started at the finishing point of the former scan regardless of whether there is a next scan command about the new manuscript or not, and then the next scan command is monitored. When the next scan command is given in a prescribed time TO, main scan is carried out immediately after the scan command is directed and the scan pre-processing is also finished. When the scan command is given after the time TO, the main scan is carried out similarly as in a normal mode, after the scan pre-processing is carried out again. When the scan is repeated while exchanging the manuscript, the exchange and placement of the manuscript and the scan pre-processing are carried out in parallel, so that the total processing time can be shortened, and a throughput can be improved.
