PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent intrusion of a foreign matter into a slide face provided in a machine element of a vertical shaft type pump such as a submerged bearing, a mechanical seal or the like. SOLUTION: This protection device 1A for the submerged bearing 16 of the vertical shaft type pump 2 is provided with a cover 29 and a fixed vane 33. The cover 29 is arranged in the vicinity of a lower side of the machine element in a pump casing 4, has a bottom, is cylindrical, and rotates together with a pump main shaft 12.
