A ventilator has a control unit (13), an analyzer (15) and a command value memory (17). During an analysis phase, a test facility detects an actual parameter for a patient's spontaneous breathing. The test values are then converted into control parameters. A ventilator is then triggered from time to time by relying on these calculated control parameters. An independent claim is also included for a device for the ventilator.
