Activation of a passive restraint

A passive restraint system for a vehicle 100 which activates only upon a predetermined level of braking by a user and probability of collision with an object greater than a predetermined threshold is disclosed. The system includes an object sensor 110 for sensing objects 120 with which the vehicle may collide and generating target information for the object 120. A brake sensor 130 senses braking of the vehicle by a user. A controller 170 is used to determine a probability of collision between the vehicle 100 and the detected and activates the passive restraint system 140 only if the probability of collision is greater than the predetermined collision threshold and the level of braking is greater than a predetermined braking threshold.
