A composition having potent anticancer activity comprising the extract of Violet(Viola xanthopetala NAKAI) is provided, which composition inhibits growth and metastasis of cancer cells, so that the composition is useful in medicines, health food and beauty additives for prevention and treatment of various cancers. The composition having potent anticancer activity comprises 0.1 to 20 wt.% of the extract of Violet(Viola xanthopetala NAKAI) which is prepared by extracting Violet(Viola xanthopetala NAKAI) with water, organic solvent or a mixed solvent thereof, and pharmaceutically acceptable carries, wherein the organic solvent is a polar sonvent selected from methanol, butanol or a mixed solvent thereof or a nonpolar solvent selected from hexane, chloroform and ethylacetate; the dosage of the composition is 125 to 500 mg/kg per day; and the composition has a formulation selected from preparation, external application preparation, suppository preparation, injection preparation and coating preparation.
