[Also in Division A5] Novel pharmacologically active 1-alkyl-1 - (# - piperidino - ethyl) - 1,2,3,4 - tetrahydronaphthalen-2-ones of the formula wherein R is H, halogen or methoxy, and the lower alkyl group contains not more than 3 carbon atoms and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof are prepared by reacting in an anhydrous inert organic solvent the corresponding 7-substituted-1-alkyl-1,2,3,4- tetrahydronaphthalen - 2 - one with a 1 - (#- haloethyl)-piperidine in the presence of an alkali metal, alkali metal hydride, or an alkali metal amide. 7 - Chloro - 1 - methyl - 1,2,3,4 - tetrahydronaphthalen-2-one is made by reacting 7-chloro- 1,2,3,4 - tetrahydronaphthalen - 1 - one with methyl magnesium iodide, dehydrating the resulting 7 - chloro - 1 - methyl - 1,2,3,4 - tetrahydronaphthalen - 2 - ol, treating the 7 - chloro- 1 - methyl - 3,4 - dihydronaphthalene thus produced with perbenzoic acid and hydrolysing the compound thus obtained.
