1,140,271. Balancing shafts. B.R.D. CO. Ltd. 3 July, 1967 [12 July, 1966], No. 31154/66. Heading F2U. [Also in Division B3] In forming a balanced welded assembly of members, a pair of members each of which includes a cylindrical portion which may be either solid or hollow are friction welded together with outwardly projecting flash being formed at the weld and portions of the flash are removed to produce a balanced assembly. The end of a tubular propeller shaft 10 for a motor vehicle transmission is friction welded to a tubular portion projecting from the yoke 11 of a universal joint to produce inward and outward flash 20, 21 on the tube 10 and 22, 23 on the yoke 11. The assembly is placed in a balancing machine and on the indications of the machine portions of the flash are machined away e.g. where indicated by line A-A to produce a balanced assembly. The remaining flash provides a fin serving as a balance weight. The tubular propeller shaft may be replaced by a solid shaft. |
