The band winding machine has a sliding carriage (5) for feeding the band to make a winding (14) on the drum (2). It has a guide rail running parallel to the axis (6) of the drum and has a frustum of a cone (3) on the end of the cylindrical drum to guide winding of the tape. The cone expands outward from the end of the drum. The band is wound onto the drum to make a winding with a sloping surface parallel to the cone and a cylindrical surface (18) parallel to the surface of the drum (19). The carriage incorporates a control circuit (C) and a pair of parallel alignment sensors (A,B).
