A road sweeping vehicle comprises a brush 19 mounted in a housing 18 communicating with a removable refuse receptacle and filter unit 40, supported between forwardly extending portions 11f of the vehicle body 11 by arms 35L integral with or rigidly secured to a shaft 26 rotatably mounted on the vehicle body. The unit is tilted for emptying the receptacle 41 by the action of an hydraulic cylinder 31 on a crank 27 mounted on the shaft 26. Pivots 65 which engage in notches 36 in the arms 35L are so located that the unit 40 tends to tilt in the direction of the arrow 66, the tilting movement being limited by engagement of stops 68 on the arms 35L with brackets 67 on the unit 40. The stops are adjustable to vary the clearance under the edge 47 of the refuse receptacle 41 and the unit 41 can tilt about pivots 65 when an obstruction such as a stone 63 is encountered. A plenum chamber 44 above the filter housing 43 communicates with the inlet 56 of a suction blower 50 mounted on the main body of the vehicle when the unit 40 is in operative position. The brush 19 is supported by arms 19A pivoted on the vehicle frame and automatically lowered as the diameter of the brush decreases, with wear. The brush is linked to a lever 15B which is normally movable along the longer limb on an L-shaped slot on the machine frame but which when located in the short limb maintains the brush in a raised position. A lower limit may be imposed on the free floating action of the brush by pivoting a lever 80 to cut off the end of the longer limb of the slot. A kerb brush (not shown) of adjustable height may be provided. To use the vehicle for general transport purposes the unit 40 is raised by the cylinder 31 and removed and the arms 35L lowered to receive, e.g. firefighting or snow-clearing equipment having pivots similar to the pivots 65. |
