A method and an apparatus for exchanging data of a facsimile are provided to prevent the data from not being exchanged due to an error in a turn-on sequence or because a receiving facsimile erroneously recognizes a mode state of a transmitting facsimile. A turn-on sequence is checked(S1) and it is determined whether the turn-on sequence is received within a mode decision time or not(S2). It is determined whether energy is checked in the turn-on sequence or not if the turn-on sequence is received within the mode decision time. When the energy is checked, it is checked whether a data signal is received in the turn-on sequence or not(s4). When the data signal is not received, a data mode is switched to a command mode. The data mode is maintained and the data signal is received from another facsimile if the data signal is checked(S5) and it is determined whether an error rate of the received data signal is more than a predetermined rate(S11). A signal for requesting retransmission of the data signal is sent to the transmitting facsimile if the error rate thereof is more than the predetermined rate(S13).
