The invention relates to a process for the purification of the dibasic acid mixture resulting as a by-product from the preparation of adipic acid, consisting in passing the mixture first over an H form highly acid cationic ion-exchanging resin which retains up to 93% of the copper content and up to 93% of the vanadium content, then passing it over a mixture comprising an H form highly acid cationic ion-exchanging resin and a Cl- or NO2- form highly basic anionic ion-exchanging resin which retains the copper and vanadium impurities up to residual concentration of 250 ppm.
