A hybrid vehicle powertrain with improved reverse drive performance

A hybrid-electric powertrain for a wheeled vehicle having a transmission 46, an internal combustion engine 54, an electric generator, an electric motor 74, a clutch and a battery. The transmission 46 establishes multiple torque flow paths including a forward drive torque flow path and a reverse drive torque flow path, the motor 74 being isolated from forward drive gearing elements by a clutch as it acts as a sole reverse drive power source. While the vehicle is reversing powered by the motor 74, the engine isolated by the clutch is able to drive the generator in a forward power mode thereby ensuring sufficient electric power to the motor 74 irrespective of the power available from the battery. The transmission can include a planetary gear set.
