A fuel cell for generating electricity from organic material comprises two compartments, each containing an electrode system comprising an electrode on the inside of a water-permeable membrane, an external circuit, and a pump for transferring protons from the first compartment via the membrane to the second compartment. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a series of two or more fuel cells as above; (2) an electrode system comprising an electrode on the inside of a water-permeable membrane; (3) a series of two or more electrode systems as above; and (4) generating electricity from organic material in a fuel cell as above by anaerobically generating protons and electrons from the organic material by means of electrochemically active microorganisms in the first compartment, transferring the electrons from the first compartment to the second compartment through the external circuit, transferring the protons from the first compartment to the second compartment by means of the pump, reacting the protons and electrons with oxygen in the second compartment to produce water, and withdrawing water from the second compartment.
|
