A device and a method for performing authentication using biometric information are provided to offer an authentication technology applicable to a user improper to a general authentication system by a different of physical features. A switch controller(12) selects one from a normal or a narrow width fingerprint minutia extracting process(16a,16b) in a minutia extractor(15) by switching switches(14a,14b) based on classification symbols of a fingerprint width inputted to an input part(10). The minutia extractor extracts fingerprint minutia data by applying the normal or narrow width fingerprint minutia extracting process. An authentication data maker(18) makes fingerprint authentication data(32) storing the fingerprint minutia data extracted from the minutia extractor and the classification symbol of the fingerprint width received from the switch controller. An authentication data register(20) records the fingerprint authentication data to a fingerprint authentication database(30). A registration result display part(22) displays that fingerprint registration of the user is completed.
