A material spreader (10) includes a belt/chain assembly (28). The belt (30) is mounted within the material spreader and the chain (32) remains out of conta ct with the material (54) during the operation of the device. A sliding barrier (38) is mounted at the rear of the belt, and moves from a forward position adjacent the front of th e spreader to a rear position adjacent the rear of the spreader.
