[Also in Division D2] An aqueous latex is prepared by emulsion polymerizing at least one aliphatic conjugated diene and at least one copolymerizable monoolefinic monomer in an aqueous medium containing a redox initiation system in the presence of a polyisocyanate compound whose isocyanate groups are insensitive to water and which is in amount not greater than 20 parts by weight per 100 parts of monomeric material, the polymerization being under conditions such that the polyisocyanate compound substantially does not react with the monomeric material. The isocyanate groups may be blocked by reaction with a compound having a functional group containing one active hydrogen atom. Suitable polyisocyanates are an adduct of trimethylolpropane and tolylene diisocyanate, tolylene diisocyanate, a trimer produced from tolylene diisocyanate and a methylene bis-(4-phenylisocyanate) which are blocked with phenol or cresol. In the examples butadiene and acrylonitrile are copolymerized using a coconut fatty acid or soap, ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid, ferrous sulphate, tertiary dodecyl mercaptan, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, a sodium salt of polymerized alkyl naphthalenesulphonic acid, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, diisopropyl benzene hydroperoxide, rosin soap, sodium salt of tridecyl other sulphate and potassium persulphate.
