PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of assembling a C-shaped retaining ring in a hole of a mounted component by a simple mechanism with high productivity. SOLUTION: The retaining ring 20 is set on the mounted component 21, and four sheets of diameter-reducing jigs 40 radially mounted along an outer periphery of the retaining ring 20 are successively moved forward to press the outer periphery of the retaining ring 20 toward a center of the retaining ring, to successively reduce a diameter of the retaining ring 20 and to make both end cut parts 20a, 20b of the retaining ring 20 overlapped to each other in the final stage of the diameter-reducing stage. The diameter-reduced retaining ring 20 is axially moved to an annular groove 23 of the mounted hole by a pressing jig (inserting jig), the retaining ring 20 is successively enlarged in its diameter to be fitted and inserted into the annular groove 23 in a state that one of the cut parts 20b is fitted and inserted to a part of the annular groove 23, and at the last, tip ends of the both cut parts are placed in opposition to each other at an interval.
