PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method and an imaging apparatus which realize simplification of circuit constitution and a processing sequence. SOLUTION: An image extraction circuit 50 of a digital camera 2 cuts image data showing a region 60 corresponding to an aspect ratio of 16:9 from image data outputted at the aspect ratio of 4:3 and discards image data showing a remaining unnecessary region 61 when image data is stored into SDRAM 43 from an A/D converter 40, or when image data is read from SDRAM 43 into an image signal processing circuit 45 if output of an image of the aspect ratio of 16:9 is selected by a change-over switch 22.
