PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium of a higher resolution perpendicular magnetic recording system. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is provided with a substrate, a lining layer formed on the substrate and made of a soft magnetic material, an in-plane magnetization layer formed on the lining layer and having in-plane magnetization, and a recording layer formed on the in-plane magnetization layer and having perpendicular magnetization, and characterized in that the in-plane direction coercive force of the in-plane magnetization layer is larger than a magnetic field generated by the perpendicular residual magnetization of the recording layer. By setting the in-plane direction coercive force of the in-plane magnetization layer larger than the perpendicular residual magnetization of the recording layer, the influence of the mirror image effect of the soft magnetic lining layer on a reproduction output at the recording density of a wide range is reduced. Thus, resolution is improved by reducing a difference between the reproduction outputs of the magnetic recording media of low recording density and high recording density.
